WaterSMART Solutions, based in Calgary, Alberta, recently joined the Hazen and Sawyer family! (https://www.hazenandsawyer.com/) We are seeking a Project Engineer/Manager to join us and make a positive difference in how water is managed in the province and elsewhere.
Job Description: As a valued member of our Calgary based team, the candidate will lead and support a variety of water resources projects.
Responsibilities:
- Project Management and Support:
- Take on a project leadership role in water resources planning and management projects and collaborate with other project managers and staff to support projects, as needed.
- Use project management tools, methods, and best practices to plan and manage projects in a way that aligns with the expectations of stakeholders and meets business needs.
- Prepare, update, and manage project work plans, budgets, and schedules and ensure that QA/QC procedures are followed.
- Prepare project proposals, reports and communication materials.
- Coordinate and provide direction to staff participating in assigned projects.
- Coordinate and facilitate internal and external project meetings.
- Attend bi-weekly project management meetings and present project updates to team members.
- Provide technical writing and editing support, as requested.
- Client Engagement:
- Maintain client relationships to ensure expectations are met and understand future needs.
- Engage with stakeholders from various sectors, including municipalities, government, industry, NGOs, Indigenous Nations, and other organizations.
- Business Development and Team Leadership:
- On an as-needed basis, contribute to business development pursuits with assistance/support from senior staff.
- Attend and potentially present at occasional conferences and seminars.
- Mentor junior staff.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum BSc in Engineering, Environmental Science, Earth Science or Hydrology or related field.
- Additional education and experience related to hydrology, water management and/or environmental planning. 5 – 7+ years of industry related experience preferred
- Engineers should have existing registration, or ability to be registered, as a professional member with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Non-engineers should have, or be prepared to attain, registration as an Environmental Professional with Eco Canada.

- Strong project management skills (scheduling, budgeting, staffing, meeting deadlines, client interactions)
- Understanding of water management issues and climate adaption principals
- Self starter with excellent attention to detail
- Excellent speaking and presentation skills
- Experience engaging with clients and stakeholders in a collaborative environment
- Excellent writing skills
- Fully proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software
- Proficiency with computer modelling and hydrologic simulation software (e.g., R studio, Python, RiverWare, OASIS, Raven) a significant asset.
Working Conditions:
- This position is a full-time, hybrid role based in Calgary, Alberta Canada, averaging 3 days a week in the office.
- Some travel will be required.
