Pursuing engineering as a career felt like a natural path for Brindha Dhanasekaran from a young age. Her mother was a civil engineer, and Brindha has fond memories of her father, a mechanical engineer, teaching drafting to young people in their community during her upbringing in India.

While the opportunity to specialize in water-specific disciplines didn’t arise until Brindha was in her master’s program, it likewise felt like the right path to her, as a keen awareness of water as a precious commodity had also been a mainstay of her childhood.

“Water was a big deal and a big part of life growing up,” says Brindha. “We had water in the house, but not free flowing all the time. We had to fill large buckets and drums to use for the week and, if for some reason water was not available, that was the main topic of discussion in the community.”

Brindha moved to the U.S. in 2005 and earned her master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from Arizona State University, where her interest in water was piqued. Before Hazen, she worked at an international engineering company focused on water, where she was immersed in a variety of projects across all phases of delivery.

Outside of work, Brindha, along with her husband and son, are looking forward to adopting a puppy in the near future. They also go on frequent family hikes and bike rides, enjoying the outdoors.
