Sarah Galst

PhD, PE

Growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina, Sarah Galst focused on math and science in school from an early age. She was also fascinated by her father’s work in civil engineering and set her sights on following in his footsteps in her own way.

Sarah attended Duke University and completed her B.S. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering. During her master’s coursework, her advisor was conducting research at the same wastewater treatment facility where Hazen’s Paul Pitt was leading a project. Her advisor suggested Sarah consider joining Hazen to learn from one of the leading voices in wastewater technology. She took his advice and after graduation moved to New York and joined Hazen, principally because of the Firm’s focus on all things water. “My favorite thing about focusing on water is that it is integral to everyone’s life,” Sarah added, “and through our work we touch everyone’s life.”

Sarah was part of the research team that discovered and developed the PANDA treatment technology. She’s proud of the fact that Hazen is using that technology to assist other utilities in benefitting the communities they serve. For much of her time in NY, Sarah has been an avid runner. While she hasn’t run a marathon in some years, her ongoing training has given her an edge when chasing her kids around their favorite place: theme parks (which is also where her husband Dave proposed during a curated ride on the Coney Island Cyclone).
