Alonso Griborio

PhD, PE

When Alonso Griborio joined Hazen in 2006, he saw his role as providing a chance to combine his passions for hydraulics, wastewater treatment, and continuous growth. These interests are all rooted in Alonso’s foundational love of water and learning.

“I was fascinated with how water moved,” says Alonso. “The idea of conveying water from one location to a community for use really motivated me and gave me a sense of purpose.”

Alonso took as many water-centric classes as he could while earning his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Universidad Rafael Urdaneta. He began working at a municipal water company after graduation, where he was first introduced to wastewater treatment. Curious to see how more advanced technologies could improve local processes, he pursued a master’s degree at the Universidad del Zulia.

Alonso’s drive to connect hydraulics and wastewater then led him to the University of New Orleans, where he earned his doctoral degree in engineering and applied sciences. Working with John Alexander McCorquodale, a pioneer in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, Alonso co-developed the 2D hydrodynamic clarifier model 2Dc, which is now the industry standard for clarifier CFD evaluation.

He and his wife of nearly 30 years are deeply committed to spending time with their four children — three of whom are grown — whether it’s sharing a meal, traveling together to visit a new city or country, or serving others in their community.
