Monika Villeneuve

P.Eng., MEL, PMP

Monika is a Professional Engineer who joined the WaterSMART team in 2024. She holds an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary and a Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL) in Integrated Water Management from the University of British Columbia. She is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Her diverse work experience spans the Canadian energy sector, international social enterprise, and water and wastewater consulting services, where she gained valuable skills in project coordination and execution, stakeholder engagement, communications, technical design, and operations optimization.

Starting her career in the energy industry, Monika supported daily operations and maintenance turnarounds, monitored integrity KPIs for continuous improvement initiatives, and led emissions-reduction projects. Upon completing her Master’s, she worked as an engineering consultant managing multidisciplinary teams to deliver water and wastewater treatment solutions for Clients. Throughout her career, Monika has taken lead roles in developing new professionals and promote diversity in the workplace.

Her desire to pursue a career in sustainable resource management stemmed from an exciting fellowship with Engineers Without Borders where she led the communications strategy for a start-up social enterprise working with smallholder farmers in rural Kenya. She also attended an Earthwatch Expedition in Churchill, Manitoba where she witnessed the impacts of climate change firsthand, further solidifying her commitment to contributing her skills for the benefit of people and the planet.

Born and raised in Calgary, Monika has a deep appreciation for the natural environment and enjoys spending her time outdoors. She is a passionate champion for change with a desire to solve complex water management issues that support a sustainable economy and protect water resources now and for future generations.
