Stormwater Management Cooperative receives 2021 Water’s Next Award

CALGARY (June 15, 2021) – On June 10, 2021 the Collaborative Stormwater Management Initiative (CSMI) was awarded the Canadian Water Summit’s 2021 Water’s Next Award in the Stormwater category. This award recognizes CSMI’s significant contribution to the water industry through its innovative approach to regional protection against the impacts of severe weather in southern Alberta.

The CSMI system is designed to reduce localized flooding through collecting, storing and moving stormwater more effectively throughout the region. Stormwater will be kept out of the Western Irrigation District (WID) irrigation canals as it is conveyed through the CSMI system, which preserves high quality irrigation water in the canals.

“We received so many impressive nominations this year,” says Simran Chattha, chair of the 2021 Water’s Next Awards. “Congratulations to all of the winners! They have all shown a strong commitment to improving and building upon the work that has been done in the Canadian water industry.”

The CSMI project was made possible by the generous contributions of Alberta Environment and Parks and the Government of Canada. A partnership between WID, The City of Calgary, Rocky View County and the Town of Strathmore, this project exemplifies the principles of regional collaboration and provides a process for ongoing cooperation between municipalities and the irrigation district for decades to come.
