The ASTech Awards brings together Industry, Government, Academia, and Entrepreneurs to celebrate outstanding contributions and achievement in Science, Technology and Leadership in Alberta.

On International Women’s Day, 2024 ASTech Awards amplified the contributions of Dr. Marlene Huerta, Dr. Kathryn Birnie, Dr. Linda Pilarski, and Kim Sturgess for their significant work in science and technology.

From ASTech Awards on LinkedIn:

“Today, on #InternationalWomensDay, we are pleased to celebrate the contribution of the many outstanding women in science and technology by putting the spotlight on four ASTech Award winners and their contributions.

Dr. Marlene Huerta received the 2023 ASTech Women in Innovation Award for her lifetime contributions. With a diverse 40-year career in STEM, including significant roles at Alberta Innovates and the Alberta Research Council, Marlene has been a key player in various sectors.

Dr. Kathryn Birnie, from the University of Calgary, received the 2023 ASTech Women in Innovation Award for her outstanding work dedicated to children’s pain management with the Partnering for Pain program and Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP).

Dr. Linda Pilarski, from the University of Alberta, received the 2009 ASTech Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Technology Award for her significant innovations and treatments for cancer diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies.

Kim Sturgess, CEO of WaterSMART Solutions Ltd., received the 2015 ASTech Contribution to Alberta Science and Technology Community Award. After Alberta’s 2013 flood, Kim produced a pivotal report that informed new policies and infrastructure improvements for improving collaborative and informed water management in Alberta, and WaterSMART continues this type of important contribution to this day.

Join us in celebrating these amazing women—and the contribution of all women on this International Women’s Day!”
