Description
Producing oil from deep oil sands reservoirs through Thermal Enhanced Oil Recovery (SAGD or CSS) is a water intensive process. Typically steam requirements range from two to five barrels of water for every barrel of oil produced. Due to these large water requirements, recycling and reuse of produced water is mandatory. However, produced water has high levels of impurities including salts, metals, silica, and organic compounds. To recycle and reuse produced water it must be treated so it can be recycled through a steam generator.

In collaboration with industry, WaterSMART created guidelines on Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Dosing Systems and Hydrated Lime Handling Systems for Thermal Enhanced Oil Recovery.
